About
the earrings
I
created these earrings by casting them in sterling or fine (pure) silver
and embellishing them with glass enamel.
Most were enameled using a technique called "plique-a-jour,"
or light of day, to create the brilliant luminance of stained glass.
Plique-a-jour is one of the most challenging and time-consuming
of the enameling arts.
To create these tiny stained glass earrings, I mix ground
glass enamel with water and a gum solution, then suspend it in the openings
of the design.
When the enamel dries, I carefully place the piece in a kiln
and fire it until the enamel grains have melted and fused to the silver.
The process can take a half dozen or more firings.
I make the beaded earrings by firing enamel onto copper
tubing with a torch.
