Q. Do you accept custom orders?
A. Yes. Email me at sheila@jewelryarte.com or call 231-864-3035
to discuss what you had in mind.
Q. What is enamel?
A. Enamel is a glass and metallic oxide mixture that when ground
can be fused to metal in a kiln. Silver, gold and copper are often
used in enameling.
Q. Will the enamel shatter like
glass if I drop my jewelry?
A. In most cases it won't break by merely dropping it on the floor.
But as with all fine jewelry, you should treat it with care.
Q. What could harm the enamel in
my jewelry?
A. Acid can etch enamel creating an irridescent effect. To avoid
this, take your rings off before housecleaning and cooking,
or wear rubber gloves. Take your jewelry
off before swimming in a treated pool or hot tub.
Q. What is fine silver?
A. Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver.
Q. What is the difference between
fine silver and sterling silver?
A. Sterling silver contains 7.5% copper to 92.5% pure silver. The
copper gives it strength. Fine silver is softer than sterling but
does not tarnish as badly as sterling. I
use fine silver for jewelry that is not likely to suffer any distortion
and sterling for items like rings that require
strength.
Q. How can I clean the tarnish
from my silver jewelry?
A. The easiest way is with a polishing cloth designed for cleaning
sterling silver. You also can use non-abrasive silver cleaners.
You also could try this: Place a piece of
aluminum foil in the bottom of a container, add a small amount of
water and mix in a tablespoon of washing
(not baking) soda. Then submerge your jewelry on top of the tin
foil and leave it in the mixture for half an hour or
so. Remove and wipe off the tarnish with a soft cloth.
